Start Tracking with GPS, Wi-Fi and GSM Cell ID Technologies
PocketFinder+ has a built in motion sensor which will cause the device to begin locating as it senses movement. Default location interval is set for 3 minutes of actively locating followed by 3 minutes of rest.
How It Works
To get a location, your PocketFinder+ will always first try to connect with the GPS Satellite network which is typically the most accurate. GPS connection can take between 20 seconds up to 75 seconds depending on satellite coverage in your area and how strong of GPS signals it can connect with. Once a good connection with GPS signals is established, it will capture as many "good" locates as it can during 3 minutes of connectivity and display each of those locates. When connecting to the GPS Satellite Network, you will see multiple locates in a row separated by 10-20 seconds.
If your PocketFinder+ cannot connect with the GPS Network or the signal is too poor for a "good" locate it will then connect with both Wi-Fi and GSM wireless networks to get a triangulated location. Of the two, Wi-Fi is almost always the most accurate. PocketFinder+ will gather a string of location data and display only the highest quality locate. If it has to use a locate data point from the Wi-Fi or GSM wireless network you will see one locate during the wireless connection period.
Alerts for entering or exiting zones, low battery or a SOS button press are set up via the web or app* and contacts that you want alerts to go to can receive text or email messages or push notification via the app. All alerts are also saved in your account in "Alerts" tab.
Alerts are triggered when information from your device is sent to our secured servers. Therefore, if a device is unable to connect to a GSM wireless network and transmit it's location or other, our servers will not know to send alert notification. When traveling international, please contact our customer service team to ensure your device is profiled for wireless connection in the country that you are traveling to.
*1/15/17 SOS management is available only via standard of mobile web browser. It will be added to the app in the next app update along with additional locate interval power modes.
The Antenna Module is located in the upper left corner when viewing the front of the device. The front is the side with the SOS Button. The device will get the best signal when the antenna is facing up and getting a clear unobstructed view of the sky.
Pressing the SOS button on the PocketFinder+ 3 times in a row initiates a SOS alert. Pressing the SOS button more than 3 times does not effect the SOS alert. The device will notify the PocketFinder servers of the alert and begin to obtain the most accurate positioning possible. Your PocketFinder+ will obtain and report as many accurate locations as possible for the next 5 minutes.
The LED will turn RED representing that the SOS alert was pressed and will remain on for the 5 minutes of active locates. Once SOS is complete and 5 minutes of tracking has been acknowledge by our server, the LED will turn GREEN and your PocketFinder+ will return to it's normal interval function.
The standard setting is for your PocketFinder+ to locate for 3 minutes and then rest for 10 minutes when moving. When not moving, it will go into sleep mode.
PocketFinder+ Devices have multiple locate settings accessed through your account's Power Management tab. 10 minutes of rest is the default, but you may change the device to constant or 4 minute locates. Upon registering movement, the device wakes up and begins its locate cycle. It will locate once every 10-20 seconds (if connecting to GPS) for 3 minutes straight. It will then go into 10 minutes of rest. Then locate once every 10-20 seconds for 3 minutes, then 10 minutes of rest. And so on. During the 10 minutes of rest, the device checks in every 2 minutes to check for alerts, SOS, and Track Mode. If the device is not getting a good enough GPS signal as determined by the threshold algorithm in our servers, it will switch to WiFi Touch/ Cell I.D. If that locate is graded better than the GPS locate, it will publish it (This is usually once every 5 minutes). At this time, if the WiFi/ Cell I.D. locate is graded the same or worse that the GPS locate it got, none of the locates will be published. During standard mode, the LED will flash green every few minutes.
If the device does not register significant movement within one minute of exiting the 10 minutes of rest, it will go into sleep mode. Once in sleep mode, it will only wake up to locate if it registers significant movement, SOS is enacted, or it is plugged in to charge. Track Mode will not work in Sleep Mode. This is because sleep mode is designed to conserve battery. It does this by not checking in with our servers every 2 minutes and not posting locates.
Clicking Track mode on your web interface or your app will signal the track command to notify the device at its next wireless check in to collect and send 5 minutes worth of locates. If able to connect to the GPS network, you will see multiple locates 10-20 seconds a part. If wi-fi or GSM only connection, you will see fewer locates. The PocketFinder server filters all "poor" quality locates so only the highest quality will be displayed. *Initiating Track Mode will drain your battery faster than allowing the device to track according to your predefined power setting. Track Mode will not wake a device from Sleep Mode.
